Unsubscribing from emails

I go through my email every once and a while, as you know, and purge everything.

It’s that season for me again. Over time, I end up accumulating a bunch of emails from lists, from buying things online, from subscribing, just because my email address gets out there over time.

Rather than trying to delete a bunch of emails (because I’m one of those people guilty of keeping a ton of emails in my inbox), I’m starting this round by simply unsubscribing from everything. Over the next week or so, I’m just unsubscribing from everything, whether I like them or not. Then, afterward, I can go back and resubscribe to any of the ones I miss. I’m thinking, though, it won’t be as many as I think it will be.

Pause…

I almost just ended the post right there, kept it simple, a quick update on what I’m up to, a peek over my shoulder.

But I’d like to highlight something here. Purging and unsubscribing from emails is a little thing, like an admin thing. It’s easy for it to seem boring or not worth publishing about. But I think there’s more to it. Email is one of those things in life that can easily get out of hand, take up way more time than you’d allocate to it if you were stepping back and planning, and – maybe most importantly – just generally doesn’t improve life, mine or anyone else’s.

Email for me right now is a metaphor for the other things in my life that get out of hand, take up way more time than I’d allocate to them if I were stepping back and planning, and – maybe most importantly – just generally doesn’t improve life, mine or anyone else’s.

Like how is this helping? It’s not. It might not be a huge drain or pain in my life, but if it’s not helping, turn it off.

How many other things are like this?
