The profile picture, hacked

Here’s what my Facebook profile looks like right now.

I discovered the idea when my friend, David, on Twitter pointed out a article at Gizmodo where someone had done it. From there, I found the original article on TechCrunch along with the guy who actually come up with the idea in the first place.

When I saw it, I knew I wanted to try to do it myself… especially since David had mentioned wanting to do it too. So I scrolled through the comments on the TechCrunch post and found someone who’d created a script to automate some of the process.

So if you’re interested in doing it yourself, visit that last link and follow the instructions. It’s still kludgy, but you can make it work. Here are a couple other pointers that helped me:

  • Use Picnik to resize your picture to 690 wide by 540 tall.
  • That script doesn’t work if you have info in your bio. I had to delete all mine. If I did it again. I’d work from a different script, but by the time I realized the problem, I didn’t feel like doing it all over again. It’s something to consider if you’re doing it yourself. If you want to keep the info, check out the comments on the TechCrunch article for other ways to hack this.
  • Again, you can find more info through the comments on that article, but when I did it, I literally used masking tape on my monitor to guesstimate all the alignment issues, like where the little boxes line up and everything.

Also, now that I know what I’m doing, I have a bunch of other ideas I might experiment with. I’m a geek. Please join me. :>)

  1. Ha! I didn’t know what you were talking about at first. I thought maybe I’d accidentally tagged you in one of those smaller pictures or something. You’re talking about on my wall, though… đŸ™‚ Yep, you’re getting around these days.
