A friend of mine just spent $1,000 for a plane ticket and a night in a hotel to interview for a job he didn’t get. What’s perhaps even more surprising for me is that I probably would have done it too if I were him.
This is the first time I’ve been in a situation where spending that kind of money could make sense and be the normal thing to do. I’m not sure I could do it – I’m not qualified for most of those jobs. But three or four others from this program have interviewed with this particular company over the past month and got offered positions. Their new salaries will more than make up for their expenses, within the first month even.
Another friend of mine leaves tomorrow. He interviewed – same as my first friend, just earlier – and got hired. It’s sad to see him go, along with the others, but I think we’re all still happy for all of them. I’m not the only one who’s not used to being in a situation where spending $1,000 to get to an interview makes sense.
