I’ve written before about the importance of stereotyping. What I didn’t note specifically, though, was that stereotyping is only part of the cycle. The whole cycle includes tests to full out those stereotypes.
It doesn’t make sense to assume everything (or even everyone) is different. As Ramit said, “We’re pretty much all the same, with specific exceptions.”
The trick then is to start with the general assumptions we make, the stereotypes, but continue to tear them down and refine them based on the feedback from tests.
