I don’t know how I missed this my whole life, but those garments that nuns wear, those black and white uniforms, are called habits.
Now, I don’t know about you, but I certainly couldn’t pick a nun out of crowd unless she was wearing her habit. To me, the habit is the single most recognizable part of a nun.
For nuns, though, I bet they’d say that’s not what defines them. I bet they’d say that what defines them is their beliefs, really, their motives for why they do what they do, why they devote their lives to God the way they do, why they’re compassionate, why they live separately, why their wear the habits.
But we, most of us, I imagine, just see the habits.
