I work in Seoul, South Korea, teaching English, for a company called Jeongsang Language School, JLS for short.
Ever since I arrived, they’ve spelled my name without an L. At the top of my teaching schedule: Marshal. In my books: Marshal. On my name tag: Marshal. In fact, even before I got here, on my contract, just Marshal.
At first, it was funny. Then it annoyed me. Then I stopped paying attention. Then I noticed again.
Now I almost appreciate it.
Now every time I see my name spelled without an L, I think I’ll think of the year I lent it to JLS.
