I’ve toyed around with building an app for a while. About a month ago, I got serious about doing it.
Specifically, I wanted to build an app I could use in my day to day life. I wanted to build it entirely with AI. I wanted it to be on my phone, not a browser-based or desktop app.
I think one of my conversations with my buddy, Bryce, tipped me over the edge to try to do this in January.
I already had an idea of what I wanted the app to do, but I used ChatGPT to give me some suggestions on how to go about it. Once I had a plan, I used Claude (Sonnet 4.5) to code it and walk me through how to set it up.
I’ll get into more of the details of the process in a future post (or series), but for now I wanted to share that I did it (or AI did with some prompting from me.
And I loved it!
That feeling when it worked for the first time.
It reminded me of when my band recorded a song called “Perfume.” It was the first time recording one of our songs. It’s one of a handful of experiences I remember vividly as one of the happiest moments of my life.
Creating this app, trying it for the first time, wasn’t as intense a feeling of happiness, but it was the same color. Joy, bliss, big spontaneous smile on my face.
