Last night, I didn’t sleep. The night before that, I only slept on and off. I don’t know how I’m still doing this.
I’ve gotten pretty good at not sleeping. I know that when I’m low on sleep, when I do sleep, I need to either take 20 minutes power naps or schedule my sleep to last in 90 minute increments.
For instance, if I have an hour to sleep, I should just sleep for 20 minutes, and I’ll feel better than if I sleep the whole hour. Likewise, if I have five hours to sleep, I should just sleep four and a half hours, which is three 90-minute increments. It’s not the sheer quantity but the quantity in the right increments that makes the difference for me, I’ve noticed.
But when it comes to these days when I don’t get any sleep, I don’t have an explanation. Perhaps my body has adapted to being used to living without sleep. Perhaps I have better reasons to stay awake than most people, and that’s what keeps me going. I don’t know.
Last night, I didn’t sleep, and the night before that, I only slept on and off. I don’t know how I’m still doing this. But I am, and I’m still awake. I might not live very long, but I’ll sure live a lot in the time I have to live.
