There was a year when I said I was going to buy a house. I believe that year was 2010. It’s been four years since then. I think I’m finally ready to buy one.
I don’t have one picked out. I’m not even living in the United States where I’d like to buy one. I do have some money, though, saved from working in Saudi Arabia, and I do have a plan.
I’d like to buy a house not to live in but to rent out. I hope to live in it for at least a year in the beginning in order for it to count as a personal purchase, not an investment purchase. That way, I’ll be able to get a better rate on a mortgage. From there, I’ll rent it out.
This is the first in a series of plans I have for a new theme in this new year: roots. I’ve lived and traveled abroad on and off for the past three years. Now I’m looking to settle down. I’ll still take trips. I still might visit more countries. I certainly hope to stay adventurous. But the primary adventure, I think, is about to take a new shape (and a house is only part of it).
