The trick to making deep connections through Twitter is just that: go through Twitter… don’t stay there.
- Search for interesting local people. Connect with them on Twitter and then parlay that into a literal cup of coffee together.
- When you discover someone new, visit their blog (if they have one, it’s probably linked to their Twitter account). Comment on some of their posts. Email them through their contact form. Consider actually using the phone.
- Follow people you know offline. Keep in touch with them everyday by asking them questions and reading their tweets. And then the next time you see these friends, mention some of what they’ve tweeted about.
Twitter doesn’t have to be its own isolated world. Make connections, not just on Twitter but through Twitter, bringing all the little details shared online into your friendships elsewhere.
Use the technology as a medium, not a destination.
