Why it’s hard to remember being brave

When was the last time you did something that was really brave?

If you’re like me, it’s hard to come up with an answer to that question. I can name a few events, but it’s hard to think of ones that happened recently, like in daily life.

Why is that?

Here’s what I’m starting to realize.

It’s often hard to recall times when we’ve been brave because a) we don’t do many scary things and b) even when we do, nothing looks as scary in hindsight.

So that first question, even though it seems like a good way to check how brave we are, probably isn’t a good measure. Because even when we are brave, we probably won’t think we are.
