Reading books I don't agree with?

Machiavelli’s The Prince is one of my favorite books. Like The Prince, I don’t agree with a lot of the books I like. But…

  • I read them because they challenge me to consider from a different perspective.
  • I read them because they force me to clarify why I disagree with them.
  • I read them because they expand my thinking.

But I wonder about this sometimes. Is this a good idea? How far is too far? Is there a balance?

And perhaps most importantly: if there’s not a balance, how do I quit?

What about you? Do you read stuff you don’t agree with? Why or why not?
