Interruption costs

The other day, I asked some friends online how much time they spend interacting online. In response, someone said they tweet throughout the day and since it only takes about 20 seconds per tweet, they only spend about 20-30 minutes per day doing it.

I don’t agree with that.

For me, even if I can write something in only 20 seconds, the cost to write that is much more. Physically writing something for Twitter is easy. The hard part is jumping back into whatever you were previously doing.

In other words, the major cost is the interruption cost.

I’m not saying to ditch Twitter. There are ways around the interruption time… perhaps batching would help. I’m just saying to be aware of how much time and effort it actually takes.

Interruption costs.
