Dreaming when awake, walking when asleep

Yesterday’s post reminded me of a wonderful (I think) quote from Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter. I haven’t read it in a while, but I remember this from it:

“We dream in our waking moments and walk in our sleep.”

I love that, and now it’s a new reality for me.

  • I want to dream in my waking moments. And I do. I think of goals and plans and amazingness while I’m awake. I think of them all the time when awake.
  • And when I’m asleep, I’d like to be more awake. I want it to feel real. I want to notice it. I don’t want to just sleep and become dead to the world.

I want to dream in my waking moments and walk in my sleep. I want my waking moments to be dreamlike, whimsical, and perfect. And I want my sleeping moments to be conscious, deliberate, and real. I want the backwardness.

What about you?
