Adios

In Facebook chat, there comes a moment when you want to get offline and need to say bye. How do you know when bye is bye?

A while back, I started saying, “Adios.” When I say that, I’m really getting off chat.

I like adios because it literally means “to God,” but everyone knows it just as “goodbye.” In that, it’s cryptic too. I like that it’s informal, but I can say it to anyone. I like that it’s foreign, but everyone understands. I like it because I can say it online or in person, and it feels right.

In fact, with all the goodbyes over the past year or so, I’ve gotten most choked up when I’ve said, “Adios.” Somehow, it has a lot of meaning for me, even if no one else notices.
